Welcome to Learning Together, our guide to supporting your child’s education journey.
Every child and young person has the potential to participate, learn and achieve.
As a parent or carer, you expect your child to have the best quality education, and the most positive school experience that your chosen school can offer.
You can also play an important part in helping make that happen. Children and young people do best when their teachers and parents or carers come together, to support their learning.
Learning Together can help. It’s full of information, practical tips and stories shared by other families on:
- Choosing a school for your child
- A guide to support for students
- Education planning for your child
- Building a partnership with school, and
- How to go about raising a concern at school.
It also includes:
- A guide to the complaints process
- Your child’s rights in the education system
- Tips for dealing with common challenges
- Tools and resources that can help
- Some families’ stories, and
- Information in community languages (Arabic, Chinese, Punjabi, Tagalog and Vietnamese).
“Just knowing your rights, I think that’s such an important thing. It was about the right to be able to communicate, and the equal opportunity, to be able to have an education.
Everybody is allowed to have an education. And things need to be modified. There’s a term called ‘reasonable adjustment’ that needs to be taken into consideration. And what a school thinks is reasonable adjustment, and what you believe to be reasonable adjustment can be at polar ends of the universe, but I think its about working that out, and coming together.
You are the expert on your child. Trust your abilities, and trust your knowledge. Because you’re the one that’s been with your child since that first day you held them in your arms. And you’ve seen them grow, and you’ve seen them change. And as much as people can tell you that they’re experts, you know your child.” Christel
Learning Together incorporates our Positive Education Planning and Transition to Secondary School resources for families of students in Victorian primary and secondary schools. These are also available in hard copy, and for download as PDF files.
Learning Together is based on our 30+ years of giving parent-to-parent support on many issues concerning education and schools. It summarises relevant policies of the Victorian Department of Education (DET) and other bodies. And it draws on the wisdom of many inspiring families and educators. We hope you find it helpful.
