The Great Australian Sunny Sizzle

The Sunny Sizzle is an awareness campaign to get people to talk about disability, Interchange and volunteering – creating a more inclusive community for all. Guest speakers include Kirsten Deane, Deputy Chair of the National People with Disabilities & Carer Council, paralympic gold medalist Katrina Webb-Denis OAM, and Thomas Glenn from Glenn Family Band and Interchange participant.

Fun in the Sun Festival 2010, All Abilities Event

The Fun in the Sun Festival was initiated by seven-year-old Jefferson Bauer and has developed as part of the Chelsea Community Renewal Initiative in partnership with Kingston’s MetroAcess and other organisations. Entry is free, with a small cost for some activities. Activities include Dorothy the Dinosaur, Choir of Hope and Inspiration, Channel 9 personalities and the Code One Police Band. Advocacy training for young people (12-25 years) with disabilities
11am-4pm, 20 March and 10am-3pm 21 March 2010
Youth Affairs Council of Victoria, Level 2, 172 Flinders St, Melbourne
This weekend workshop is hosted by the Youth Disability Advocacy Service in partnership with the Disability Discrimination Legal Service and Action for Community Living. It is designed to increase the capacity of young people to advocate for themselves about the issues that are important to them and their communities.
Some things that young people will get out of the course include:
- Improved understanding of advocacy
- Increased awareness of advocacy strategies
- Increased understanding of disability rights, how to make complaints and the law
- Improved problem-solving, communication and assertiveness skills
- Ability to apply knowledge of advocacy to a specific advocacy issue that is important to you
- Free lunch!
- The opportunity to meet other young people
Young people with a disability living in Victoria who are aged between 12 and 25 can take this course for FREE and have their transport reimbursed up to the value of $100.
Young people from rural and regional Victoria who require overnight accommodation in Melbourne will be reimbursed up to $200 dollars with receipts.
Attendant support and AUSLAN interpreting will be provided during the training sessions upon request. Support that is needed outside of the training sessions will need to be arranged and funded by the participant.
